On the Dynamics of Easterly Waves , Monsoon Depressions , and Tropical Depression Type Disturbances

چکیده
The authors argue that certain aspects of the rotational, synoptic-scale disturbances of the wind field that are observed in ITCZ or monsoon trough regions can be understood by considering the linear response of a dry, initially resting atmosphere to a pulse of heating whose amplitude and spatial and temporal scales are characteristic of a large mesoscale convective system. The key points are that short Rossby waves have small intrinsic group and phase velocities, and that a heating pulse projects much more energy on the Rossby modes if it is located slightly off rather than on the equator. It follows that synoptic-scale Rossby waves, with characteristics broadly similar to those of observed disturbances, should be present in ofd equatorial regions of persistent deep convection, since large mesoscale convective systems tend to develop in such regions.

Western Pacific Tropical Cyclogenesis Precursors
The basic ingredients for tropical cyclogenesis have been well established: a sufficiently deep warm ocean layer, low-level cyclonic vorticity, weak vertical wind shear, and deep moist convection (e. et al. 2008) have attributed cyclogenesis to a variety of low-level precursor systems that enhance one or more of these ingredients. These studies have traditionally focused on features such as the...
متن کاملPerspectives on Moist Baroclinic Instability: Implications for the Growth of Monsoon Depressions
Little is known about the genesis and growth mechanisms of monsoon depressions, despite the great importance of these storms for the hydrological cycle of the Asian–Australian monsoon region. Of the few theoretical studies that have examined this issue, most have attributed the amplification of monsoon depressions to some form of baroclinic instability or stable baroclinic growth, highly modifi...
متن کاملWhat Percentage of Western North Pacific Tropical Cyclones Form within the Monsoon Trough?
It is frequently stated that 70%–80% of western North Pacific tropical cyclones form ‘‘within the monsoon trough,’’ but without an objective definition of the term. Several definitions are tested here. When the monsoon trough (MT) is defined as the contiguous region where long-term (1988–2010) mean July– November 850-hPa relative vorticity is positive, 73% of all July–November tropical cyclones...
متن کاملDevelopment of Synoptic-Scale Disturbances over the Summertime Tropical Northwest Pacific
This study addresses the origin of the synoptic-scale disturbances that occur in the tropical western North Pacific ocean (WP) region in Northern Hemisphere summer. These have been called ‘‘easterly waves’’ and ‘‘tropical depression–type’’ (TD) disturbances. This analysis uses the National Center for Environmental Prediction–National Center for Atmospheric Research reanalysis dataset. By perfor...
متن کاملTropical cyclogenesis in a tropical wave critical layer: easterly waves
The development of tropical depressions within tropical waves over the Atlantic and eastern Pacific is usually preceded by a “surface low along the wave” as if to suggest a hybrid wave-vortex structure in which flow streamlines not only undulate with the waves, but form a closed circulation in the lower troposphere surrounding the low. This structure, equatorward of the easterly jet axis, is id...
